Davie Anderson was down the pit and Martha was at the school. Martha and her big sister, Helen, lived in Penicuik with him and Jess, in Shottstown where all the miners lived. Jess had made a pretty bedroom for them: they had a bed each with patchwork quilts on them and white sheets with embroidered edges. She’d given up work to look after them and was always cooking and cleaning and mending and washing and sewing and going her messages. She was a good cook. Every dinner and teatime Martha and Helen came in and sat down at the table to home-made soup, meat and tatties, and rice pudding or apple dumpling or jam sponge – all their favourite things.
